The SCORPS grabbed yet another media mention in October with a shout out in Playboy magazine. Page 19 of the November 2009 Playboy Issue is below:
"Scorpions, the boston-based anti-establishment book club that celebrates "hard-guy" books has gotten a debate rolling on the web. Which are the best hard-guy books of all time? Tops on its list is Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian."

Rule #543 of the SCORPIONS
When we speak, you listen . . . period..
The SCORPIONS last completed book selection was World War Z - An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. In general the book was very SCORP as it included tales of death, survival, mental anguish and the complex social structure of the living dead. However, World War Z made one critical error... they ignored the SCORPS.
On August 20th the following message was sent to the publisher of World War Z. This type of communication is standard SCORP procedure. Should an author or publisher respond to us we will consider them a participant in SCORP Nation, which comes with benefits ranging from signed coffee mugs, misfired shotgun shells and the occasional bouquet of flowers (albeit dead ones).
The negligence of Max Brooks led to an average B rating of World War Z and the black listing of all Brooks books from future selection consideration.
Every SCORP chooses his fate when he joins the club. Should we approach you, your associates or family pets, by forced association you are "involved". Max Brooks, you have been put on indefinite suspension.
Below is the SCORPION's communication to Brooks:
Campbell (Random House Agent):
I'm writing you from SCORPIONS worldwide headquarters in Boston, MA. In short, we are an "all hard guy" book club that focuses on kicking ass. I'd like to inform you that we recently selected Max Brooks' World War Z as the SCORPION book of the month. Last week SCORPIONS was featured in the New Yorker and Gawker.com. Our organization/gang/club/cell block has since garnered signfignat attention drawing interest from a reality TV series, a proposed book deal and various offerings amongst outsiders to join the group. Several thousand people are now visiting our website (www.readbleed.com) every day where they are finding World War Z prominently promoted. We are very pleased with World War Z and would like to inform you it has been officially certified "SCORP Worthy".

The Prestige of being SCORP Worthy
Max Brooks' World War Z will now be added to a SCORP of Fame list that includes, Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" and Earnest Hemingways "To Have and Have Not". We have asked authors awarded this prestigious status for a signed poster, book, deck of cards, zombie discards, etc. to decorate our meeting lair. In addition, if Max is available if he could respond to this email we will also feature his response on the SCORPLog (ie. blog). Max has fundamentally changed our policies and strategic preparation for zombies and we would be honored with any parting thoughts he could provide us.
We appreciate your time and hope this note can find its way to Max.
Read. Bleed.
